The Hart House Social Justice Committee, in partnership with the Cinema Studies Student Union, is excited to announce that on Wednesday, March 13th, we will be hosting a film screening of “1948: Creation and Catastrophe” followed by a Skype Q&A session with directors Ahlam Muhtaseb and Andy Trimlett.
Through riveting and moving personal recollections of both Palestinians and Israelis, this documentary reveals the shocking events of the most pivotal year in the most controversial conflict in the world. It tells the story of the establishment of Israel as seen through the eyes of the people who lived it. This documentary was the last chance for many of its Israeli and Palestinian characters to narrate their first-hand accounts of the creation of a state and the expulsion of a nation.
The documentary took over 10 years to make and is filled with extensive archival material and video footage collected from over five different countries. During our Q&A session, our audience will be able to find out more about this long and strenuous filmmaking process by engaging in conversation with the two directors.
This documentary and Q&A present a unique opportunity to learn about the history of the region as well as to hear about the lived experiences of the political documentary making process. We hope the historical background offered by this film provides insights to your understanding of the contemporary state of affairs.
