SUMMARY:Ad Hoc presents: Fuses\, 9 Variations on a Dance Theme\, The Golden Positions
DESCRIPTION:AD HOC #57: The Body in Film \nInnis College\, Room 222 \nMarch 20\, 2024\, 7PM \nFree admission \nTrailer: www.vimeo.com/923323883 \nThis program features erotic and cine-dance films that reshape the actions of the body on screen. In Hilary Harris’s 9 Variations on a Dance Theme (1966-67)\, Bettie de Jong performs a dance for the camera as it breaks down and reassembles her movements\, reconciling a vast trove of compositions. Captured through twenty-five sessions over the course of a year and reduced to only 13 minutes\, Harris’s film is a dynamic reconciliation of the body in time. James Broughton and Kermit Sheets made The Golden Positions (1970) is a meditation on the body in tableaux and the body in movement\, forming a catalogue of subtle\, tender\, and gymnastic musculature more playful than those of Eadweard Muybridge\, but doubtlessly descended from him. Carolee Schneemann’s Fuses (1964-67) was made as an homage to her relationship with composer James Tenney\, an erotic film that searches for the resonant core of a shared experience\, in this\, it is a film of love in which\, in Schneemann’s words\, neither lover is “subject” or “object.” \nProgram: \n9 Variations on a Dance Theme (13 minutes) \nThe Golden Positions (32 minutes) \nFuses (22 minutes) \nTRT: 67 minutes \nAD HOC aims to rethink what an experience of cinema can be. We seek to reposition historical landmarks and buried treasures within the on-going tradition of experimental and other non-commercial modes of filmmaking\, drawing on work from Toronto\, throughout Canada\, and internationally. Within these parameters\, we aspire to diversity in programming\, as well as to multimedia and interdisciplinary screening events that bring together varied communities. \nAD HOC = Stephen Broomer\, Madi Piller\, Jim Shedden\, Tess Takahashi\, Bart Testa. \nAD HOC is made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Innis College and the Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto. AD HOC would like to thank James Cahill\, Denise Ing\, Charlie Keil\, and the staff of Innis College and the Cinema Studies Institute.

SUMMARY:'Climate Coins & Consciousness: A Collective Cellphilm' Screening Event
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to present ‘Climate Coins & Consciousness: A Collective Cellphilm’\, a remarkable film crafted over a 5-week cellphilm workshop series. Through the innovative use of cellphones\, this film emerges as a true masterpiece\, drawing upon arts-based and participatory research methods. \nThis groundbreaking project showcases the voices and stories of 10 passionate racialized climate justice activists from various regions across what is currently Canada. Together\, they have embarked on a journey that not only highlights their struggles but also paves the way for change in climate philanthropy. By shedding light on the challenges faced by racialized climate justice activists in securing funding for grassroots initiatives\, projects\, and non-profit organizations\, this research serves as a catalyst for discussion and transformation with environmental funders. \nOur event promises an enriching experience\, featuring the film’s screening as its centerpiece. Additionally\, we are honoured to have Lauren Castelino\, the principal researcher\, share invaluable insights into the key barriers and solutions within the climate philanthropy space. Through a panel discussion\, involving the media\, environmental funders and racialized climate justice activists we will explore how to reshape the environmental philanthropy landscape throughout what is currently Canada. \nAs the night unfolds\, you’ll have the opportunity to engage in networking\, guided by discussion prompts. To enhance your experience\, we’ll also treat you to complimentary food and beverages. \nJoin us for an evening of inspiration\, knowledge\, and networking that will leave you both informed and energized to drive change in the world of funding for climate justice. \nWe are grateful for the financial and in-kind support of Foundation for Environmental Stewardship – Youth Harbour\, York University – Academic Excellence Fund\, the University of Toronto’s Student Environmental Resource Network\, Regenesis and our team at the Green Career Centre for making this project and event come to life. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead less

SUMMARY:Ad Hoc presents: Chumlum + Early Abstractions Numbers 1-5\, 7 & 10
DESCRIPTION:AD HOC #58: Chumlum / Early Abstractions \nInnis College\, Room 222 \nMarch 27\, 2024\, 7PM \nFree admission \nTrailer: www.vimeo.com/923360483 \nThis program features two remarkable films that define the heterogeneous nature of underground cinema. Chumlum (1963) was made by the American absurdist filmmaker Ron Rice\, who passed before his time leaving only a handful of masterful\, diverse films. Of these\, Chumlum could be cinema’s greatest behind-the-scenes document of filmmaking\, shot on the set of Jack Smith’s Normal Love\, with Smith’s coterie of creatures in costumes both esoteric and alien\, filmed in continuous superimpositions that give their transgressive parade an unexpected grace. Harry Smith\, the sorcerer-dean of American folklore\, embraced a variety of camera and cameraless technique in the making of his Early Abstractions (1946-1957)\, films that are precise in their action\, profoundly allegorical in their imagery\, but loose in an overarching structure\, an imprint of the artist’s fascinations changing over time from non-representational geometric abstraction\, to the photographic animation of paint-on-canvas\, to figurative collage. \nProgram: \nChumlum (23 minutes) \nEarly Abstractions (23 minutes) \nTRT: 46 minutes \nAD HOC aims to rethink what an experience of cinema can be.

SUMMARY:Images Festival presents: OPENING NIGHT! La noche eterna (The Eternal Night)
DESCRIPTION:A Cuban poet has been arrested and sent to prison. There he meets a young Evangelical man from the countryside and an older actor who has been accused of trying to assassinate Fidel Castro. The actor ushers the two men into the prisoners’ social world\, showing them how to resist the authorities’ attempt to re-educate them. To enliven the prisoners’ evenings\, he convinces the warden that screening films would be a much more effective means of teaching inmates about the benefits of socialism. And thus\, a cinema is created inside the prison. \nThe Eternal Night is a film based on the true story of Cuban writer and former political prisoner Néstor Díaz de Villegas. In 1974\, Díaz de Villegas was sentenced to six years in prison for writing a poem. He was eighteen years old. Prior to his imprisonment\, he had already been subjected to censure several times for his nonconformist attitudes\, which were deemed by the revolutionary government to be ideologically divergent. \nThe term “ideological diversionism” was introduced by Raúl Castro in the early 1970s. It functioned as a legal and moral category that criminalized dissent. It was applied to various Cuban citizens: some who were considered to be intellectuals; youth that showed an interest in American popular culture and music; those presumed to be gay or lesbian; as well as religious people whose faith prevented them from performing political obedience. In other words\, anyone who was ideologically divergent was guilty of expressing ideas outside of those sanctioned by the state. Such ideas were considered a menace to the nation and a threat to its leader’s ideological hold on the population. A hold that was essential for continuing the hegemonic status quo as it existed at that time. \nDespite these circumstances\, Coco Fusco’s The Eternal Night rings with the transcendent potential of imagination. It depicts the delicate dance of refusal against a regime\, told through the story of three Cuban young men who were condemned for their beliefs and creations. \nPlease join us for a conversation with Coco Fusco following the screening. \nThis film was commissioned by Sharjah Art Foundation and co-commissioned by The Wapping Project. Additional support was provided by the Latinx Artist Fellowship and Anonymous Was a Woman. \nImages Festival thanks the donors who supported this program: Aman Mangat\, Carlos Yep\, Dhruv Jain\, Kunle Bristow\, Nuri Sidhu\, Milada Kovacova\, and Scott Miller Berry. \n\n\n\n\nCoco Fusco\n\nCoco Fusco is an interdisciplinary artist and writer. Her works are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art\, the Art Institute of Chicago\, the Walker Art Center\, The Centre Pompidou\, the Imperial War Museum\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona. She is a professor at Cooper Union in New York City.

SUMMARY:Content Farm Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:On April 23\, the Canadian Film Forum presents a special screening of the CBC Gem web series\, Content Farm\, with creators Alaine Hutton (HBA ’11 Cinema) and Lauren Gillis (HBA ’11). \nContent Farm is a three-part\, science-fiction social commentary about two rogue bots who teach themselves to be human on the internet. Nothing is original\, and clicks are king. \nAlaine and Lauren will join for a discussion and Q&A following the three-part screening. \nTuesday\, April 23 at 7pm\nTown Hall\, Innis College\, 2 Sussex Ave\nRegister for this free event below.\nTwo halves of a neural network learn to be human on the internet\, where nothing is original and people’s lives are ruined for fun and views. From the odd and obliquely filthy minds of Lauren Gillis and Alaine Hutton\, a speculative fiction unfolds in the doomscroll. Cringe comedy and social commentary clash in a deepfake reality dating show\, a washed-up comedian platforming bot conspiracy theories\, and of course\, AI-generated melting dog faces. As scary as the real internet\, but slightly more charming. \n\nAbout Alaine Hutton and Lauren Gillis \nAlaine Hutton and Lauren Gillis are a performing\, writing\, directing\, and designing duo with a decade of shared training in physical performance and making people uncomfortable.
